The City of Prince Albert’s Municipal Cultural Action Plan (MCAP) is a nationally and internationally recognized initiative that brings together diverse voices to strengthen culture, reconciliation, and community connection. Developed through a city-wide cultural planning process led by a multi-sectoral Working Group, the plan reflects input from over 600 community members and continues to evolve through ongoing collaboration.
Prairie Wild has supported the City from the beginning—facilitating engagement and developing the MCAP, which includes actions, strategies, and indicators tied to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and other City priorities. Since its adoption, over 750 activities and initiatives have been linked to the plan.
To mark MCAP’s 5th anniversary in 2021, Prairie Wild worked with the City and community to refresh the plan and evaluate its implementation. The cultural planning process has catalyzed related efforts in Prince Albert, including the Prince Albert Urban Indigenous Coalition (PAUIC), Community Building Youth Futures, the Social Action Plan, and strategic plans for key organizations.
MCAP received the 2023 Commonwealth Association of Planners’ Outstanding Planning Achievement in The Commonwealth in Planning for Equitable and Inclusive Cities and Human Settlements, and the 2017 Saskatchewan Professional Planning Institute’s Award of Excellence recognizing its leadership in advancing collaborative, community-based planning and implementation.
