International Projects

  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserves

Through the Canadian Commission for UNESCO our company has been involved in a number of studies and peer-related audits related to Biosphere Reserves in Canada and abroad. Biosphere Reserves are living laboratories devoted to education, promotion and research. Biosphere reserves are sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science. As places that seek to reconcile conservation of biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development through partnerships between people and nature, they are ideal to test and demonstrate innovative approaches to sustainable development from local to international scales. • Trinidad International Outreach, Community Capacity and Community Planning, Port of Spain, Trindidad, Canadian Institute of Planners.

In November 2003, Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) launched a three-year Canada International Development Agency (CIDA) funded program aimed at reducing poverty and improving the quality of life in pilot communities in East Port of Spain, Trinidad. The program focused on strengthening local planning processes and the institutions that deliver them. Prairie Wild Consulting Co. volunteered time and resources to provide in-the-community technical expertise from 2004-2006. This work led the development of the City's first community plan and later to legislative changes to allow municipalities more autonomy over planning. This work was presented at the 2006 United Nations World Urban Forum and CIP conference in 2005. Click here or here for more information.

  • Local Municipal Governance, East Africa

Working as part of a Federation of Canadian Municipality (FCM) technical team travelled to East Africa to work with an association of local governments in various countries to share a set of best practices in local governance from Canada. Numerous shared learnings occurred through this process.
